In short, it's an equation that tells you how much energy constitutes a given amount of matter. It's pretty weird to think of matter as simply "condensed" or "solidified" energy. What is energy, anyway? If you can truly answer that question (just saying that it's the potential to do work doesn't explain everything) you're probably the world's next Einstein.
