Well, where to begin? I'm sure most everyone has heard the news by now and most likely have also seen
this. Perhaps the above comic would be a promo clip more people could
relate to right now.
Like many, I too was first taken aback by this "bold" choice of console names. On one hand, I have no problem with the
monicker on a visual level. I think it's actually pretty pleasing aesthetically to look at the simple W followed by double
i's. And I can appreciate the "hip" new spelling of a commonplace word. Even the statement on the official Revolution site explaining
the new name I can agree with. But we live in a world where written words are
spoken from time to time, and here's where I get a bit hung up. At present, I don't believe I could comfortably use "Wii"
as a noun in common speech. There's just something off about it. I'm confident I'll get over it, though. As the initial
shock wears off and the gaming public begins to use the name more casually (as oppossed to solely being used for pun and joke
fodder)I believe it'll find its niche in our vernacular. Even if Einstein had instead been named FiFi Boogabums, his accomplishments
would still stand undiluted. So too will it be with the Wii. Even if the name rubs you the wrong way, the good games will
still be there and that's what matters.
